Tetris Couldn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any significant prize-giving event draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to recognize unsung work and delight the hearts of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

Another commentator previously argued for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, this being a passionate advocate's mission. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument for why my demand is the most urgent above others. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason cinema institutions don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of interactive entertainment excellence to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Current Gaming Award Categories

The major gaming awards offer these classifications covering Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications actually cover many game types, making space possible for numerous titles.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, showing diverse approaches: building puzzles in a particular game, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. What category would fit them within current classifications? Simply put, no category fits.

Recognition Challenges

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers published annually lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit award groups including Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser wasn’t nominated for anything that year
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Only a few logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, and engaging with almost every other genre.

The Solution and Justification

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.

Restating the point, these include experiences lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions within interactive entertainment. Just like movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
