The anticipation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious image of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is developing a fresh Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was showcased with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal descent into chaos.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
Anyone hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio warned that a follow-up to its venerated RPGs is not being worked on now.
Nevertheless, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the main series. This distinction hints that the team might be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is universally respected and many say it sparked the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for rich lore, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its universe is classic fantasy, what makes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have simplified options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs only possible with a particular class or origin with a personal story.
The series is also famously permissive, letting players to find creative solutions both in story and combat. Nearly every quest can be solved in multiple ways, frequently in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you heeded something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a unorthodox way.
More to Come
It is precisely these elements that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games in history. Now, the RPG community can get ready for a new entry in this esteemed franchise.
