London Eye Designer Proposes Ambitious Fourteen-Mile Tidal Power Station Off Somerset Coast

The visionary architect behind the London Eye has revealed plans for a colossal tidal power project stretching in a 14-mile semi-circle off the coast of Somerset. This groundbreaking scheme aims to capture the power of the tides to address surging electricity demand, fueled in part by the expansion in artificial intelligence. Interestingly, the proposal also envisions a unique bicycle path that would allow cyclists to skim over the surface of the Bristol Channel.

The £11bn Vision

The architect, who also designed the i360 observation tower, is part of a team that has drawn up the £11bn plan. The lagoon would curve from Minehead to Watchet harbour and utilize around one hundred and twenty-five underwater turbines to generate power from the region's second-highest global tidal range.

“Should the choice is to proceed with embracing more and more AI – which I am surprised is rarely challenged further at a time of climate crisis – then it is far better with a clean power source,” stated the architect. “Datacentres could significantly increase electricity needs and this is a predictable and reliable source.”

Addressing the AI Energy Crunch

The initiative comes against a backdrop of increasing anxiety that the rapidly rising use of artificial intelligence in the UK will escalate carbon emissions unless more renewable energy sources are developed. The expansion of AI is projected to add to steep rises in power consumption across the nation.

The proposed barrage would not block the entire width of the channel. Instead, it would create a semi-circular structure with a peak capacity of 2.5GW – not far from the output expected from the adjacent Hinkley Point C power station. This output would be enough to supply approximately two million homes.

A Multi-Use Landmark

The ambitious vision goes far beyond energy generation. It proposes a path along the crest of the lagoon wall for pedestrians and cyclists, a marina for sailing, a open-air swimming pool, and an viewing platform. Planners have also floated the idea that data centers could be installed within the structure, taking advantage of cheap seawater cooling.

Additional elements envision oyster and mussel beds, arrays of solar panels on the water, and a seaside amphitheater to revitalize the local economy of Minehead, which has experienced deprivation in recent years.

A Reliable Energy Source

Energy from tides is viewed as more predictable than wind or solar, despite daily periods when the tide changes. Backers of the Somerset tidal project estimate it would have a lifespan of 120 years, potentially producing power more cheaply than nuclear power over its lifetime.

The scheme was first conceived several years ago with the primary aim of reducing the UK's carbon footprint. The subsequent rise of AI has created further impetus to the plan, as electricity demand from datacentres are predicted to increase substantially in the coming decades.

Navigating Challenges

This latest proposal is the newest in a series of ideas to harness the tidal energy of the Severn Estuary. Earlier concepts for more extensive structures have raised worries about environmental impact. The current sponsors stress that their proposed lagoon would not disrupt shipping channels to the ports of Bristol and Cardiff and is located outside protected nature areas.

“Minehead and that entire region of the county is an economically challenged region and this project will drive regeneration,” the architect commented. “It will create high-quality full-time jobs, an area for aquatic sports, a lido, a tourist center, an observation tower and cultural facilities.”
