In a historic milestone, global solar and wind installations have generated greater power than coal plants in an unprecedented shift this year, signaling a pivotal moment for the worldwide energy sector.

Renewables Surpass Electricity Demand

A recent analysis revealed that during the initial half of 2025, clean power outpaced the increasing global appetite for power, leading to a small decline in fossil fuel consumption.

Globally produced almost a third additional solar energy in the initial six months of the period compared with the equivalent timeframe in 2024, meeting 83% of the global increase in electricity demand. Wind power expanded by approximately 7%, enabling renewables to replace traditional energy in a historic first.

Geographic Contributions and Differences

India and China were primarily driving the surge in renewables, as per the analysis, unlike the US and Europe, which relied more heavily on coal and gas.

• The Asian giant installed more renewable energy capacity than the global total combined, leading to a two percent drop in its consumption of traditional energy in the first half of the period.
• India grew its renewable energy by over triple its power needs – being much lower this year – causing its coal and gas usage to drop by three point one percent and thirty-four percent respectively.

Conversely, needs for power in the United States exceeded its growing clean energy industry, causing a seventeen percent rise in coal-based power over the initial six months of the period.

In the EU, power needs showed limited growth compared with the first half of last year, but a weather-related decline in hydro and wind power meant that even fast-rising solar power could not prevent fossil fuel production rising by 14% and 1.1% each.

Projected Expansion and Developments

Another report indicated that worldwide renewables could more than double by the close of 2030, with four-fifths of new clean energy power expected to originate from solar energy.

The expansion in global renewable capacity in the near future will be dominated by solar PV – but with hydropower, wind, bioenergy and geothermal each playing a part, too,” remarked a leading energy authority.

The report highlighted that The People’s Republic would remain the world’s biggest growth market for clean energy, with India emerging as the next biggest over the rest of the decade.

Alongside expansion across established markets, photovoltaic energy is poised to surge in nations such as Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and several south-east Asian countries,” the expert noted.
