An Down Under teenager has tragically died after being hit by a cricket delivery during a practice session in Melbourne.
The 17-year-old athlete was training in cricket nets in the Melbourne suburb on Tuesday when he was struck in the upper body by a ball from an mechanical bowler. It's believed he was wearing a helmet at the moment of the incident.
Emergency services were called to the scene shortly before 17:00 local time and the teenager was transported to Monash Children's Hospital in grave state. He was placed on life support but died on the following day.
Community Reaction and Support
The teenager's community sports organization expressed they were "absolutely devastated" by the "untimely death" of one of their team members and that the youngster's death "will be felt by all in our sports family".
"I understand how heavily this news will land across our local area and we will provide any and all assistance we can to our clubs and sports community," said the local cricket association president.
In a social media post, the teenager's sports team offered their sympathies to his family and friends and "to everyone who were acquainted with him and the joy that he provided".
"We ask you to please honor the privacy of the family during this difficult time," the post added.

This tragedy happens just over a ten years after another national player passed away after being struck on the neck by a delivery while batting in a domestic competition.
That earlier death, for which authorities determined no fault could be assigned, sparked enhancements to protective gear for those playing the sport.
