Net Zero: An Insidious Loophole Distracting from the Scientific Imperative to Eliminate Fossil Fuels

As global leaders gather in Brazil for the 30th UN Climate Change Conference, it is crucial to evaluate how we are faring together in reducing global greenhouse gas emissions.

Despite 30 years of United Nations climate conferences, approximately half of the carbon dioxide accumulated in the atmosphere since the Industrial Revolution has been emitted since 1990. Coincidentally, 1990 was the publication of the First Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, which verified the threat of human-caused global warming. As scientists prepare the Seventh Assessment Report, they do so aware that scientific findings remains eclipsed by political agendas. Despite sincere attempts, the planet is still far from the path to avert catastrophic climate change.

Unprecedented CO2 Levels and Fossil Fuel Dependency

Recent data indicate that CO2 concentrations reached a record high of 423.9 ppm in 2024, with the growth rate from the previous year surging by the largest yearly increase since record-keeping started in the late 1950s. According to the Global Carbon Project, ninety percent of worldwide carbon dioxide output in 2024 originated from the combustion of carbon-based energy sources, while the other tenth was due to land-use changes such as forest clearance and wildfires.

While the rise in carbon emissions from fuels in recent times was propelled by higher use of natural gas and petroleum—representing more than 50% of worldwide discharges—coal burning also attained a record high, constituting forty-one percent. Despite Cop28’s global stocktake urging nations to move beyond fossil fuels, global strategies still intend to produce more than double the quantity of hydrocarbons in 2030 than aligns with limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius, with ongoing drilling of natural gas justified as a less polluting bridge fuel.

The Illusion of Eco-Friendly Measures

Instead of concentrating on economic incentives to accelerate the phase-out of carbon fuels, environmental strategies are overly dependent on feelgood nature positive approaches that aim to neutralize carbon emissions by planting trees instead of cutting factory discharges. Although conserving, expanding, and restoring natural carbon sinks like woodlands and marshes is inherently good, research has shown that there is not enough land to achieve the global goal of net zero emissions using ecological methods by themselves.

Approximately 1 billion hectares—a territory larger than the United States of America—is needed to fulfill net zero pledges. Over forty percent of this area would need to be converted from existing uses like food production to carbon sequestration projects by the year 2060 at an unprecedented rate.

Even if this regenerative utopia could be achieved, forests take time to mature and can burn down, so they should not be viewed as a quick or lasting carbon storage solution, especially in a rapidly shifting climate. As extreme heat and dryness affect larger regions, these well-intentioned efforts could actually be destroyed by fire.

The Diminishing of Natural Carbon Sinks

Research data tells us that about 50% of the total CO2 emitted each year remains in the atmosphere, while the remainder is taken up by oceans and terrestrial systems. With global heating, these natural carbon sinks are becoming less effective at capturing CO2, meaning that additional CO2 builds up in the air, further exacerbating climate change. Transferring the mitigation burden onto the agricultural and forest sectors simply relieves the oil and gas sector from the pressure to reduce emissions in the near future.

The Climate Liability and Future Generations

Achieving net zero by 2050 requires CO2 extraction (CDR), which currently relies almost exclusively on terrestrial methods to soak up surplus CO2 from the atmosphere. Polluters can simply purchase offsets to compensate for their discharges and proceed with normal operations. Meanwhile, the planetary heat imbalance resulting from the combustion of hydrocarbons continues to further destabilise the global climate system. In effect, we are adding more carbon debt to our planetary credit card, leaving our descendants with an insurmountable burden.

To curb the scale and length of overshoot the Paris Agreement temperature goals, the planet eventually needs to go well beyond the neutralising effect of carbon neutrality and start to drawdown past carbon outputs to reach a carbon-negative state.

The Policy Misrepresentation of Carbon Neutrality

Based on the most recent data from the Global Carbon Project, plant-based carbon removal is presently capturing the equal of about 5% of yearly CO2 from fuels, while technology-based CDR accounts for only about a tiny fraction of the carbon released from carbon sources. More generous sector projections place it at around zero point one percent of total global emissions. At the risk of sounding like a heretic, the political distortion of net zero is an insidious loophole that takes focus away from the research-based necessity to eliminate the primary cause of our warming world—fossil fuels.

The Urgent Need for Concrete Action

While this scientific reality should lead discussions at Cop30, history suggests that gradual, cautious steps and political kowtowing will win out. Vague statements of future ambition will keep on delay the pressing requirement for concrete immediate action. Unless policymakers have the courage to implement carbon pricing to bring the era of fossil fuels to a definitive end, we are releasing increasing amounts of CO2 to the air, worsening the environmental disaster currently happening all around us.

The challenge we confront is simple: take real action to the scientific reality of our crisis or endure the results of this profound moral failure for generations ahead.
